How to Prepare for a Tattoo Consultation in Toledo
A good tattoo starts with a conversation. You don't need a finished drawing or every detail figured out before you reach out, but a little preparation helps your artist understand what you're imagining.
If you're planning a tattoo in Toledo, here's what to think about before sending your consultation request.
Start with the idea, not a perfect drawing
Tell us what you want the tattoo to mean or look like. It might be a specific subject, a style you love, a memory, or a few images that capture the feeling you're after.
You can share what you definitely want included and what you're open to changing. If you're not sure how to turn the idea into a tattoo that works on skin, that's part of what the consultation is for.
Bring reference photos that explain your taste
Reference images can help show composition, line weight, color, mood, and detail. They don't all need to match. Sometimes one photo shows the subject while another shows the style.
When you request a tattoo consultation, you can upload reference photos along with your description. Let us know which details matter most to you.
Reference images are a starting point for discussion, not a promise that another artist's exact design will be copied.
Think about size and placement
A tattoo's placement changes how a design should be composed. A design intended for a forearm may need a different approach on a shoulder, leg, or ribs.
Have a rough location and size in mind, even if it's just “about palm-sized on my upper arm.” More detail can come later. Your artist can help explain whether the amount of detail suits the size you're considering.
If you're weighing a smaller design against something more involved, browse our custom tattoo services and artist portfolios for ideas.
Find an artist whose work feels right
Look through finished tattoos, not just drawings or flash. You'll get a better sense of linework, shading, color, and the type of projects an artist enjoys doing.
Meet the Last Hope artists, explore their actual tattoo photos, and visit their Instagram profiles. You can name a preferred artist in your inquiry or choose “No Preference” if you'd like help finding the right fit.

Be open about your budget
It's useful to share a comfortable budget or ask about the likely scope before scheduling. Larger, more detailed projects may involve more than one session.
At Last Hope, the shop minimum is $100 and the standard rate is $150 per hour. A 20% deposit is typically required and applied toward your final tattoo cost. The project and any session plan should be discussed before you commit.

Mention existing tattoos and cover-ups early
If the new tattoo will sit beside existing work, send a photo showing the area. If it's meant to cover an older tattoo, clear pictures of the existing ink are especially helpful.
Cover-ups have different design considerations from tattoos on untouched skin. The size, darkness, placement, and condition of the original tattoo affect what's possible.

Questions worth asking during a consultation
A consultation is a two-way conversation. It's fine to ask how the artist would approach the design, whether it needs to be simplified or enlarged, how many sessions might be involved, and what to expect before your appointment.
If it's your first tattoo, you can also ask about preparation, aftercare, and how healing affects the finished work. Our tattoo aftercare guide is a useful reference.
